In a deal that makes a lot of sense at this point in time, Groove Armada (Electronic/experimental/funk), has left their home at Sony BMG, for a….Rum company??? That’s right, corporations (that aren’t record labels) are signing bands and offering new types of deals.
In the article, the deal is Bacardi will fund recording, promote the album, and pay the band a salary (undisclosed) if the band gives them exclusive rights to use the songs in advertising.
This may be a good deal for the band in the short term. Who knows what will happen in the next few years, but this trend is sure to continue in the immediate future. Have you seen Madonna’s new shampoo commercial which conveniently promotes her new song with Justin Timberlake? I’ll go into more detail on this in my next blog.
For now, I’ll leave you with the big single from Groove Armada, “I see you baby”
