You look at at any band that has had a lasting career and you have to ask how they make it work. If keeping two people together seems harder than ever with the rising rate of divorce, how do 4, 5 (or more) people keep it together?
The answer or at least one significant reason is the strength of the internal relationships within your band. If you get together only to play music, it’s just a business relationship. If you don’t hang out outside practice/performance/band business, you don’t get to build a friendship, you don’t develop that commitment to each other and to the music. It may seem like common sense, but a lot of bands break up over various issues related to their internal relationships. Granted, the music is important. If someone’s not coming to practice or cutting out of gigs, you shouldn’t just let them stay in the band if their heart’s not in it and yours is.
It may not be easy at times, but who said it was?
I found a great video featuring ?uestlove of The Roots talking about this being the reason his band has stayed together for 16 years.
Enjoy,
