As some of you may know I am a huge fan of Bob Lefsetz. Above is an actual picture of Bob. Man what a babe….. of course I’m kidding. Bob has wayyyy better hair extensions.
Bob Lefsetz is one of the smartest people in the world when it comes to the future of music. Although I don’t always agree with everything that he says, his posts are at the very least entertaining.
I’ve been a subscriber to the Lefsetz Letter for about a year now, and through that year it seems that he keeps harping on one major point. THE MUSIC MUST BE BETTER THEN GOOD. IT MUST BE GREAT.
Now this may seem obvious, but it’s constantly overlooked in favor of other things like marketing, image, web presence, etc., But recently he posted a blog titled the “Talent Era.” In it, as you would assume, talent is the only thing that will help you and your music. This is the New Rule.
You must give your soul to the music and the audience will come to you, oh and your soul must have talent, real talent, Lennon/McCartney talent, 2Pac All Eyez on Me talent, Marvin Gaye talent, not bullshit attitudes, fake tits, and faker tattoos.
If you have rock star notions without first having the music then you deserve nothing and you will get nothing. Attitudes don’t sell records. They sell tabloid magazines and web space on Perezhilton.com
A perfect example of this rule is Madonna’s new single “4 Minutes”[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nfUjfioAnKY]
I think that this is a piece of garbage. Expensive, slick, garbage, but garbage nonetheless. You may disagree, but after Madonna’s last record which contained one of the best dance singles of all time (yeah i said that, wanna fight about it?) I was looking forward to see how this Chameleon would reinvent herself. This single will do well, but it will pale in comparison to “Hung Up” which was killer.[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T8FikEflip4]
Don’t judge the video. Judge the song. Cuz the song is king and the New Rule is that you have to have the goods to make the goods.
