John Mayer spoke to students at the University of Miami regarding his success and songwriting.
One of the strongest points he makes is regarding having something to say. People aren’t stupid and can tell if you’re faking it. People want the real thing. Keep that in mind when you’re writing your new material.

John Mayer – on Songwriting and a Career in Music
Its obvious from the comments from John Mayer – on Songwriting and a career in music that he appreciates the hard work there is in writing a great song. He didn’t say this directly but I got the sense that it wasn’t the speed but the quality of the song.
John is a trained songwriter at Berklee College so not only is he an artist but he has been trained in the art and craft of songwriting. Although the bar for writing a great song is very high, John is proof that it can be reached.
There are many ways to improve a song, often its a number of small changes that can add up to having a huge impact. Writing a great song requires getting a whole series of things right so they all work together. John’s songs demonstrate he knows how to do this.
Thanks for providing the chance to view the video. I never get tired of seeing how each artist turns a blank sheet of paper into something inspirational.
