Barenaked Ladies: A Dent In The Image

[ 5 ] July 20, 2008 |

Barnaked Ladies’ frontman, Steven Page was recently arrested for posession of cocaine. If you don’t know the band, you might think “So what? Another Rockstar doing drugs…who cares?”

However, if you actually know the Barenaked Ladies, they’ve built an image as being regular guys, playing light, funny pop rock. Their manager, Terry McBride, cancelled an upcoming Disney gig because of the incident. Yes, they’re light enough to be wanted by Disney.

So you can see how this might have a negative impact on their career. They’re not Pete Doherty, who actually gets a career boost from all the press around his druggie lifestyle.

The Barenaked Ladies’ have developed this good guy reputation even by having the name they do. So I’m sure they’ll overcome  this mini-crisis. It’s just worth noting how inconsistencies in perception can cause negative backlash.

im still amazed that they were able to release a kids cd under the BNL name. the songs are OK kids fodder, but who would buy their 6 yr old a cd by someone of “that” name????

  2. I know hey?

It goes to show you how a name in itself can be associated with something entirely different. I remember when I first heard about the band in the early 90′s. They were going to be on some talk show and when I heard the name, I was like, “what the…Isn’t this prime time tv?”. Now if you hear the name, I think of the band first.

    Thanks for the comment Mal.
