So you may have heard of this Katy Perry girl who’s being talked up because of her catchy single, “I kissed a girl”. Apparently Perez got the buzz going on her and now she’s popping up everywhere. Good for her….. but let’s talk about the point of this post.
Industry Analyst extrordinaire, Bob Lefsetz pointed out the huge disconnect between her album sales and single sales.
To quote one his recent posts regarding selling singles vs albums ,
“1. Katy Perry “I Kissed A Girl”
Sales this week: 162,951
Percentage change: -7
Weeks on: 11
She only sold 31,971 albums total. And, of those, 6,233 were digital.
Seems like a hit today is the track and the track itself. I think the sale of one and a half million copies is significant. But it shows that although the oldsters want to sell albums, the little girls not only don’t understand, they don’t care”
That’s a huge difference…..1.5 million singles sold vs 32,000 albums sold.
Just from this contrast alone, it doesn’t make much financial sense to invest heavily in making an album. If you can generate interest and sales from singles (itunes/ringtones), you can convert that into into merchandise sales, ticket sales, and higher fees for placement in film/tv/new media.[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D5OiJsoJjWM&feature=related]
