But what always struck me when listening to Matchbox 20 (when i was a teenager) was that it always ALMOST there. Either the production, or the feel of the song, or something, never quite jived with me. I'll take another look at his material. Maybe its time to give him another chance. Trouble is, most people just hear the songs the label wants released to radio. Someone once asked him for advice on how to be a songwriter and he said something like if you have to ask you ain't one, that he and most songwriters that he knows write because they have to. From what I understand he had a pretty rough life growing up, literally living on the streets, busted for robbery and a few other crimes, and other troubles. Hell, he probably has more street cred than half the heavy rockers or rappers out there, but everyone thinks he's this middle-of-road, white bread dude. Far from it, apparently. As he said in "Something to Be", "my pain is a platinum stack." And he has often said if hadn't found music as an outlet he'd probably be in prison, certainly in therapy. I think it's his need to connect that makes him such a good songwriter. Thanks for the link to the video.
