In late May of this yearm I spend 4 days with Jason Blume, and Gavin Brown, at a Songwriters Workshop
Jason Blume is a songwriter who has had significant commercial success writing with the likes of Britney Spears, The Backstreet Boys, and Gypsy Kings.
Gavin Brown is a producer, musician and songwriting doctor as he likes to call himself, who has an impressive commercial track record. Gavin won the Juno award for producer of the year in 2006 for his work with Billy Talent and Three Days Grace.
Both Jason and Gavin had some interesting musing about song competitions but the general consensus was that most song competitions are bogus.
They charge too much and give you too little, even if you win.
Do you know who won “song of the year” for 2007’s International Songwriting Competition? Neither did I.
Most entry fees are between $5-$30 and the competition claims that your song will be reviewed by famous musicians and industry people.
Both Jason and Gavin have been panelists for songwriting competitions and have said that they only get to hear the top 4 or 5 songs once they have picked through by competition officials. So although the idea of having Beck listen to your song may sound alluring, the likelihood of it actually happening is small.
Save your money. Go buy a home protools kit, and work on your craft.
