Since it’s The Beatles week, I wanted to point out another important player in the success of the band. Brian Epstein, manager of The Beatles, was able to recognize talent early on and guide a bar band into a cultural juggernaut.
The Beatles wouldn’t have been what they were without Brian Epstein’s attention. He put them in suits because he knew it would help get them on TV. He fought for The Beatles appearance on Ed Sullivan, which broke them in the America, and of course like all great managers, toured them relentlessly.
The Beatles talent sparked their success, but Epstein, their manager, magnified it. Talent alone was not enough.
Being a talented musician who doesn’t pay attention to the business side today is totally cool if you have no interest in starting a career. You don’t have to be a business stiff, but realizing your band is a mini-business is key if you actually want to make a serious go of it.
Today, you may not even attract a manager unless you’ve developed some sort of buzz (like a 6 month stint in Hamburg).
The more you know for yourself, the more you’ll know be able to hold a real manager accountable.
