Spotify is a new Major Label approved music service that allows users to stream music in a more web 2.0 fashion. Because it has Major Label approval, Spotify has an extensive catalog that allows users to create and share playlists. It has a very iTunes like layout and according to CNET, Spotify has received relatively positive reviews.
Yet the problem I still see with this style of digital music service, is that it’s a one trick pony.
Yes you can use it on your Mac or PC, yes it’s faster and has less dropouts then older streaming sites, but the reason that compact discs and iPods work so well is the portability factor. Burn a disc and give it to your sweetheart. Make a playlist on your iPod then plug it into the car adapter.
There is a freedom to those technologies. They work because they enhance the experience. Streaming technology still hasn’t permeated the general public. It’s still for the geeks.
When streaming audio becomes as simple and as accessible as FM Radio, meaning that it’s built into nearly every audio device you can buy, then the music industry will have solved the piracy problem via streaming.
Until that point, Spotify will be a better step then slotMusic but people will still take the music they want.[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cFSCcbL6EJQ]
