Corey Smith on Indie Careers

In December I wrote about Corey Smith, the indie artist who grossed $4.2 million last year. Lefsetz pointed out how Corey and his manager are doing it via free music.
Dave Kusek from FutureofMusicBook.com posted a few videos of Corey doing a lecture at UGA. I’ve posted the videos below, but what I found most interesting was his passive approach. Here’s a guy who dreamed of being a Rock Star, grew up, got married, became a teacher, but still loved writing.
Creating an album just because he won some money from an open stage event, he proceeded to sell initial pressings to friends and family who then burned copies for other friends. A few years later, he’s pulling in $4.2 million from letting the music speak for itself while charging nothing upfront.

I hope I can skip the teaching part and just make it to the 4.2 million…by tomorrow.
