I used to read Sports Illustrated from front to back.
They had this entertaining little snippet that was called Sign Of The Apocalypse. In it, they would reveal a little known fact that was so preposterously ridiculous that it was a sign of the impending apocalypse.
Well I think the reuniting of Faith No More deserves to be seen in the same light. Not because they aren’t a good band or don’t deserve the same accolades as other bands of that generation. Their reuniting deserves to be viewed as a sign of the apocalypse because it shows how insignificant new music is.
The Pixies, My Bloody Valentine, and The Police all found the goodness in their hearts to reunite. But who benefited? Their wallets got fatter, their classics were played extra well, and people remember the good old days, when bands were few and music mattered to everyone. Back when music was a cultural force that changed things for the better.
How about instead of reuniting old bands we start cultivating a culture that values new music. Every time an old band reunites for some fantastic tour it simply entrenches the quietly held belief that artist of today are simply not as good as artist of yesteryear.
Yet ultimately that belief needs to be changed by the artists of today. They/we need to step up and change our culture and our world.
I feel that that time is upon us. If you checked out Hoovers blog about John Mayer, then you’ve heard Mayer speaking about the importance of crafting great songs. Mayer, a musician built around creating great song after great song, claims that right now great songs are in high demand because the supply is so low.
Faith No More will play some great shows this summer. I know more then few people will be excited about the chance of seeing them. But still it leaves everyone looking to the past for an emotional connection for today. That speaks to the power of the music made, but that also says much about the kind of culture we are living in.
We need to drop our obsession with the past and start creating heroes for the 21st century. Heroes who will provide us with a NEW interpretation of this 21st century emotional connection.
