Look out kids! MySpace may be headed to the Friendster funeral home!
As the Guardian recently reported, the dirty old step father of the social network world has been losing audiences worldwide. Although MySpace is still doing fairly well in North America, in Europe it’s losing the battle. Facebook and Bebo are stealing the MySpace audience, and everybody’s friend, Tom, may be leaving too!
You know things are bad when not even Tom wants to be your friend. According to the reports MySpace had 124 million monthly unique visitors last month, a decline of 2%. Facebook, by contrast, racked up 276 million unique visitors, an increase of 16.6%.
So what does this mean for artists?
Well, as long as you haven’t been going steady with MySpace then you should be alright. Your Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and other online homes should be enough to weather whatever storms come MySpace’s way.
But then again, how many people do you know that use MySpace as their primary social network? Probably not many. Most people have already switched to Facebook or Twitter.
Yet how many people do you know that use MySpace as their primary way to check out a new band? Everybody. You’re not heading to a bands Facebook Page for new music. You are STILL using MySpace (or YouTube). So this cold water shrink that MySpace is experiencing may not be as important to artists as it may seem.
Just keep an artistic identity on the other social networks and you’ll be fine. Now if you’ll excuse me I need to update my Bebo page.[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ymxPy-CY90U]
