Sometimes the amount of talent I find in the world is staggering. Hearing amazing new music on a weekly basis makes me very happy I am alive at this point in time. But still, much of that amazing music goes unnoticed by the masses. Why is that?
Often at NRP we write about how great music will find a way. I still believe that, but for millions of people to sink their teeth into a artist, it usually takes one enormous song. A Yellow, a You Oughta Know, but those hits are rare.
Another way, that could be easier, is to create your own niche, your own tribe. We’ve talked about this before, but only recently have I come to realize what that REALLY means.
Not only must EVERYTHING you do be authentic, but you have to SPIN it in the right way. That means your fans must be able to understand your personality is DIFFERENT from the other artists.
To do that you need to:
- Find what is unique about you and your music. – Like really unique. Is it a vocal style (very sexy). Is it a guitar tone? Is it a style of music (Vampire Weekend)? Whatever it is, find it.
- Once your “thing” is identified shine a big bright glorious spotlight on that. Illuminate it until everyone knows that your band is that band that has ____ , or does _____, or plays _____ .
- Weave it. Make sure that your “thing” is intertwined with every part of your image, identity, being, etc. People must know about it, see it, and, hear it and believe it.
Doing those things will help the world understand you, and you’ll build that loyal fanbase that sustains careers. Now you and me could probably think of more ways to establish your tribe, and I think you we should, but right now MJ died and I’m going to arm myself for the Thriller Zombie Revolution![youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hMnk7lh9M3o]
