Lately I’ve been tripping on time and how we all get older, we all grow. Today, thinking of some of my teenage musical tastes makes me cringe. And yet I still listen to some that music. But only the stuff that was really good. The stuff that transcended a genre, or a tone, or a fad. That great music was true to itself, not to time. It was timeless.
That’s what you need to strive for in your music. A sense of timelessness. Hopping on trends may get you far in the short run, but trends die out as quickly as they appear. If you base your music on a trend, your fans will jump ship as the next trend comes along.
The crux of your band must be the music. The lyrics, the melody, the rhythm. Nothing else. The other stuff helps but it’s all about the music.
