How Much Money Do Bands Make From Streaming Services?

[ 1 ] April 14, 2010 |

Information is Beautiful reminded me once again of how streaming is not going to be THE ANSWER for musicians. If you need 4.5 million streams to make minimum wage with Spotify then it obviously won’t pay the bills. Lady Gaga will make some scratch, but the average hard working band will not be seeing much return from streaming services.

Yet streaming technology is a very good way to bring in new fans, as Hoover pointed out recently. So it’s not the answer, but like it or not streaming services like Grooveshark and Spotify are here to stay and like all change, it’s better to embrace it than fight it.

OMG, I did not even know that… Half an US-$-Cent for 1.5 million plays per month, isn’t that ridiculous? I guess the promotional effect is bigger if you opt-in for the royalty free streaming programme on last.fm.
