A couple nights ago I was hanging out on the front porch with some friends and wine.
At one point in the conversation, the band “The Decemberists” came into play. One person could not stop raving about them and saying they’d fly to go see them live. The other could not stand the band. The vocals just didn’t do it for him.
The raving fan insisted to take another chance on the band and recommended an album to check out. She couldn’t believe someone could not like this band. She’s a Decemberists evangelist, spreading the good word and convincing the naysayers.
This is the type of fan an artist should cultivate. If someone you know passionately goes off on a band, you’re going to check it out. If they’re that amped about the band, there’s gotta be something there. That’s the beauty of word of mouth. You don’t need a million dollar marketing budget if you can cultivate a small army of passionate fans.
