CBC Radio has a very candid interview with M.I.A. In the video Maya speaks about the issues in her life, her new album (and it’s controversy), the internet, and offers some insight into her growth as an artist. Very cool indeed.
On the Internet:
The internet has changed hands (corporately controlled)… It isn’t a utopia… it’s not easy any more… sharpen your skills to tell human from machine.
Why does artistic progression need to be the same way as a corporation’s growth? Growth to me is growth to me. . . My growth chart is wonky, but do you remember that we’re human beings? (Rather than an Apple sales chart)
On how to deal with Haters:
Be prepared going in… Of course this is going to happen… When you push things forward it’s uncomfortable for people if people don’t get it…. good people are often hated. …I’m just a little bit ignorant.
How to “Make it”:
Sell out…I turn down practically everything. I don’t compromise. You need to sell out to have power and access, you kinda of have to stand for nothing… Hello welcome to the music industry.
The video runs nearly 40 minutes so make a cup of tea, sit back and enjoy.
