Big news people, Arcade Fire are nominated for a Grammy in the Album of the Year category for their record The Suburbs. Deservedly so, amazing songs, with current ideas and an electrifying live show.
Merge Records, Arcade Fire’s indie label, have become big players in the music industry with the success of Arcade Fire, but they haven’t changed what they do. Sign talented artists who they love, provide them with what they need to make their music, and stand by a band’s artistic decisions.
The funny thing is that calling Merge Records an indie label is a bit of a stretch. The label and band deserve all the credit for creating this album, but everyone knows that the playing field is level in the music industry.
Of course a band who makes music, and videos like Arcade Fire would be huge sellers. Merge just needed to show up and support and the rest is history.
Finally a quick point about the Grammys. Yes, I still think they are largely bullshit, but with better artistic choices like Arcade Fire and the audience that the Grammys still pull, this appears to be a win win for everyone involved.
It’s strange to see a band grow into, not so much a new artistic world, but a new commercial world. It feels like the mainstream has finally caught up with this band and as an early stake holder I can’t help but cheer Arcade Fire on…even if it’s the Grammys.
