The newest Zeitgeist movie is here. My friends and I watched the epic film and amongst many thoughts I began to wonder about value.
Value is a distorted word for me, immediately conjuring up connotations of money, but that’s not the kind of value I’m talking about here. I’m talking about artistic value. The kind of value that your fan will place on you and your music.
What kind of value does your music have? What kind of value does your artistry have? Are you a clone? Are you an original? Can you be replaced? Can your music be distinguished for its value?
IMHO when an artist creates an original and cohesive world for their music, then they create value for their fan. [Note: This presupposes that you’ve got GREAT music]
The artist’s world must be a cohesive artistic experience for the fan. Music, videos, photos, lyrics, online presence, etc…You need those elements to be highly valued, but that’s only half the story.
In addition to the “How” is the equally important “Why”.
“Why do fans place value on your music?” is where originality, niche, and your own uniqueness shine through. If you are original, create your own sound, and separate yourself from the pack it will give people a reason to stay with you. When people connect with “why” they connect with your true art and reason for creating music. That is a deep connection.
Bring something truly original, truly unique, and truly of value to your fans and they’ll have more reasons to stick with you.

Voyno, the subject of the value of music is thoroughly discussed in my book “How the music industry got it so wrong”, which can be bought from http://www.huge.id.au/shop/index.php?route=product/product&product_id=51
If you’d rather try it out, you can read the bare bones at http://www.huge.id.au/How_the_record.html or download the most up-to-date from version as a pdf from http://www.huge.id.au/E-book.html
In short, I argue that the record industry is floundering because it thought it was selling music but it was really selling technologies over which it no longer has control. Music cannot be sold, but that doesn’t make it worthless …
I’d love to know what you make of these ideas and I’m happy to send you a free copy of the latest version if you email me …
Cheers,
Dr Huge
