Dunnah if ya heard but Red Bull, the energy drink company, has had an amazing musical retreat happening every year since 1998 called The Red Bull Music Academy. Hoover was telling me that he was applying and I took a closer look at what the whole Academy is. Turns out it’s a musician’s dream:

The Red Bull Music Academy is a series of music workshops, a platform for those who shape our musical future. Every year, two groups of 30 selected participants – producers, vocalists, DJs, instrumentalists, and allround musical mavericks from all around the globe – come together for two fortnight-long ‘terms’. At the Academy you will hear lectures both from pioneering mavericks of old and trailblazing sound rebels of the present, followed by late-night recording sessions putting that breadth of knowledge and inspiration into practice in ten custom-made studios. –RBMA

At first I wasn’t going to apply thinking it was only for DJs but then I saw that in 2002 they had my personal favourite artist, Caribou, speak at the Academy and I was sold.

The biggest barrier to getting in is filling out the large-ish questionnaire that will test your mind and your drawing skills. That plus a demo CD and you’re in… er at least eligible.

Also here at The New Rockstar Philosophy We don’t normally promote too many corporate agendas but an intensive 2 week workshop like this would be a benefit to any musician so we’re encouraging you to apply.
