Last year we ran a post about moving to a bigger city for your music. We talked with Chris, the main man behind The Sexy Mathematics, about how he had prepared for the move to Toronto. Ten months later I got a chance to catch up with Chris and find out how his move has been treating him.
How did you get your new band together?
I was able to assemble my entire band through online classified ads. At first this might seem a bit absurd, especially considering how important the group dynamic is in a band, however so far everyone gets along and we are having a lot of fun performing.
How are you establishing your name in a bigger metropolis?
I think no matter where you are, one of the best ways to establish yourself is by performing in front of as many different people as possible. In Saskatoon this was definitely a limiting factor since you are usually performing in front of the same crowd at each show. Since there are so many more people in Toronto it gives us the opportunity to perform more regularly in a variety of venues to different people each time.
What has been the biggest problem? + how have you overcome it?
The biggest challenge has just been starting from scratch. Fortunately before I left we recorded the new album however upon arriving in Toronto I didn’t have a band so it took about 6 months to find people and rehearse before we were ready to perform again. Even now we are still busy learning the rest of the songs off the albums. In spite of all this though things are definitely progressing and we have had exciting times performing such as during our previous show at Lee’s Palace.
Where can people see you next?
If you’re in Tornoto, you can see The Sexy Mathematics next at The Rancho Relaxo on August 31st and Duffy’s Tavern on September 9th.
