Stumbled on a video of Sir Paul McCartney talking about where songs come from.
We all know there really aren’t any rules to writing songs (sure most pop tunes have a variation of the verse, chorus, verse, chorus, bridge, chorus outline) and inspiration comes from all sorts of places, but Mr. McCartney talked about how he challenged himself to write a song using only two fingers.
Inspiration can be born out of constraints. Even if it’s a self-created constraint as per McCartney.
He goes on to talk about the eternal classic, “Yesterday”, a tune played over 7 million times on American radio!!! The song came to him in a dream and he later realized it was about his mom passing away. He could have retired after writing that song. However, he talks about how he loves writing and playing too much to stop and would do it as hobby regardless.
I thought it was worth sharing with ya’ll as he’s obviously one of the greatest songwriters to ever grace the planet earth.
