I found this on Tumblr: Gandhi’s top 10 fundamentals for changing the world. It’s meant for everyone, but looking at it from a musicians perspective can be quite interesting too.
- Change yourself – This first fundamental is the key to all of the other ones. If want something changed on the outside we first must change it on the inside.
- You are in control – Often people blame others for much of their situation, musicians even more so. Don’t fool yourself, the reason your album isn’t finished is because of you.
- Forgive and let go – Still hate your drummer? Still think you should have got top billing? Still holding on to things that are sinking you? Let go and move on.
- Without action you aren’t going anywhere – Your new video isn’t going to shoot itself.
- Take care of this moment – Quite often in the hurry up and wait game of being a musician we don’t always notice how special the moment is. Appreciate that, because that’s all you have.
- Everyone is human – John Lennon, Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell, you are all human. I always find this levels the playing field, at least in theory.
- Persist – Don’t quit, Gandhi didn’t and he managed to help kick out an empire that had been in his country for hundreds of years.
- See the good in people and help them – Working together and sharing your knowledge will forever be a good thing for your music.
- Be congruent, be authentic, be your true self – This is pretty much the key to success in the new music business.
- Continue to grow & evolve – Another key point. Humans change, your music will change. Embrace it or die.
