Reminder: Steal From Other Musicians #MJ #HallandOats

[ 0 ] January 4, 2012 |

The TIL (Today I Learned) categorie on Reddit is a place of constant mind blowing facts like this one:

According to Daryl Hall….Jackson approached him and admitted to lifting the bass line for “Billie Jean” from a Hall and Oates song, apparently referring to I Can’t Go For That (No Can Do). Hall says that he told Jackson that he had lifted the bass line from another song himself, and that it was “something we all do.” -Wiki

Stealing, borrowing, copying, whatever you want to call it, is an integral part of music. Jackson was aware of what he was borrowing. Are you aware of what you’re stealing? Perhaps you should be. I’m not suggesting that you steal a bassline…. wait..uh.. no, actually that’s exactly what I’m suggesting. Steal from your favourite songs! Take their elements, remake them and who knows, you may write the biggest song of the decade.
