I have an extensive CD collection which has largely been forgotten about.
Since digital music arrived I’ve been playing music off of my iPod/iPhone for a while leaving much of my CD collection to simply collect dust in the basement.
But physical discs are necessary still. Especially if you are sending out your music to college radio. The program directors that I’ve spoken with (Canadian radio) all have indicated that they still want a physical discs (jewel case). The cardboard, non-spine, sleeves, get lost in the mix.
So instead of going out and buying new jewel cases for the 50-100 CDs you’ll be sending out, why not use what you already have?
Head to your basement and gather the 100 shittiest CDs that you have. Take out all of the stuff from the inside. Get a local printer to make 100 CD inlays. Put all that together and boom, you have a set of CDs to send out, or sell at shows, all for a fraction of the cost. Not only is this cost effective but you are helping the environment too and that is always a good idea.
