Who you choose to spend your time with can tell you a lot about your own situation. Especially in music. Typically similar groups of people tend to hang out together. Misery loves company is the saying and it’s the truth. So if you find yourself hanging out with people who complain, you’re probably a complainer. Conversely if you surround yourself with hustlers, then you’ll tend to start hustling more as well. Take a look at your own situation.
- Are your musician friends working hard?
- Inspiring you to be better?
- Achieving accolades in their field?
If not maybe it’s time to make some new ones. I’m not saying ditch your crew, I’m just saying that you should be actively making friends with people who know more than you, work harder than you, are achieving more than you because if you’re the best one in the room it’s time to change the room.
When you surround yourself with high achieving musicians it will inspire you to rise up. When a friend wins $15,000 in a music competition, that should be fuel for your fire. The mind set of hard working smart musicians is one that you should strive to be a part of. Make friends with people who are better than you and absorb the mind frame of people who are getting things done.
Or just get stoned and talk about it. Whateves. I’m not your father.
