Mary Meeker presented her 2015 Internet Trends report at the Code Conference in Cali and it’s filled with key information for artists. You can read the whole thing here but below I’ve picked out the 4 trends that will impact your music-making-self.
1. The next revolution for making money as a musician: BUY BUTTONS
Finally mobile commerce has evolved to allow fans to purchase wherever and whenever. That will literally look like “Buy Buttons” all over Twitter, Facebook, Google. It may seem still some time away but according to Meeker the change will be quick and seamless.
Will this change empower the DIY musician? At a time when the DIY world seemed to be closing in on itself a change like Buy Buttons could be the injection DIY musicians need.
2. Vertical Screens. Vertical Screens. Everyone watches Vertical Screens.
Remember a few years ago when your friend started recording a video vertically and you freaked out on them? Obviously people want wide screen so you don’t have those ridiculous black bars when you upload the vid.
Well have times changed kid. Thanks to Snapchat, Vine, and other video platforms nearly 30% of all video is now viewed vertically. Compare that to just 0.4 in 2010.
So what does this have to do with artists? Well we need to be ahead of the curve. If Vertical videos are growing in popularity you need to capitalize on that. Make a vertical video, start using Snapchat, and Vine. Finally go apologize to your friend. That wasn’t cool man.
3. Video Eats All. Not a huge revelation but video is becoming hugely popular. It accounted for 64% of consumer Internet traffic in 2014, up from 52% in 2013.
4. Social Media is only getting bigger. Obviously but specifically video based social media is blowing up. If you’re on your grind you need to be using a video social media platform. The easiest would probably be to have a artist Instagram account, post videos to it, cross post to the official Facebook page and then Tweet it out.
